Back in late January, AD and I put up some new bird feeders. Although the weather was very cold and we were sure there were hungry birds around, the perches on the feeders remained empty.
AD put an old cookie sheet below the feeders and filled it with seed, hoping that might catch a passerby's attention.
Since then, I've watched throughout each day hoping that some hungry bird would pass by, see the free food and stop for awhile.
Finally, yesterday a couple of red-winged black birds showed up to feed from the pan. I watched intently and finally one hopped up on one of the perches and began to eat. YEA!
I ran to get my camera hoping the birds wouldn't be frightened off before I was able to snap some photos. YEA again - I was able to capture a couple of shots before they flew away.
Note: I apologize for the fact that the pictures aren't very clear. Rather than risk scaring our visitors off by opening the door, I took the photos through the glass.
Today the black birds came back and brought a few brown-feathered friends with them.
Since I'm not very good at identifying birds (because of the size I don't think these brown ones were sparrows), I have no idea what kind of bird hopped up on the perch. See his little tail feathers hanging down on the left side of the feeder? Maybe next time he'll perch on the other side of the feeder and I'll be able to get a better shot.
I'm just glad the word is spreading around the bird grapevine.
oh my, I love red wing blackbirds, their song gives me chills when I hear it! When I was little I lived with my Grandpa in the country right by a little swamp area and I loved looking at and hearing those birds!
ReplyDeleteI just filled my bird feeders yesterday and have not seen one darn bird yet. They're staying in my neighbors yard. Maybe her bird seed tastes better than mine? LOL

You'll have bunches of birds pretty soon as word gets around. So you have squirrels too?
ReplyDeleteYou took those pictures through the window?? Your windows are cleaner than mine!:)
ReplyDeleteI love watching birds - but I'm afraid our barncats scare them away.
You need not worry, somehow birds find a good place that feeds them. Your little birdhouse is cute. Always glad to have you visit.
ReplyDeleteThey found you! Now that they have, you will be find that you are going to have a hard time keeping them all fed. At least that's they way it is with pigeons! :D
ReplyDeleteThis spring, we'll put the feeders up on the side yard so their song wakes me in the mornings.
I've had bird food out for weeks and am still waiting for some takers. Wish I could try your clever idea with the pan, but there's nowhere I can reach to put one that my dog can't reach to get it!
ReplyDeleteOnce they find you and tell all of their friends, you will be filling that feeder more than you ever thought possible!
ReplyDeleteYes it can take awhile for a feeder to become established sometimes. Hi from another Okie :-)
ReplyDeletedear one, your photos are great...the focus...everything!
ReplyDelete"the word" must've gotten around in Bird World about "the fancy new digs" at oklahoma granny's place!
i love your birdhouse! i'd visit too if i were one of the winged-ones! hehehe
ReplyDeleteYour pictures are great! I attempted to take a shot of a cardinal sitting on a snow covered bough. I showed Thomas and he asked what he was looking for. I replied: See that red dot. It's not a holly berry. It's a cardinal.
ReplyDeleteNeedless to say, I did NOT post my photograph.
I have an old swingset frame that I use to hang feeders from. It sat empty for a long time. Then I moved it over to an area that has a little cover, like trees and wisteria. Now the feeder stays empty. I guess they didn't like being out in the wide open space.
