One year ago yesterday (Saturday) this guy showed up at our back door. He was literally knocking on the back door with his tail.
It was late in the afternoon and a very cold day. We just couldn't turn him away.
AD fed and watered him, then fixed him a warm bed in the shop.
He came with no collar and a big wound in his side. The pads on his paws were in good shape so he hadn't traveled too far. AD thought he'd been dumped and I thought so too.
AD attempted to play with him by picking up a stick to throw for him. When Mikey saw AD pick up that stick he ran the other way, giving us more reason to believe he'd been abused.
(About a month later we took him to the vet to get him some shots. Mikey was NOT going to get in the truck. We think the truck might have triggered a bad memory or two. Eventually we did get him in. AD had to sit in the back seat with him, petting and assuring him all the way to the vet that everything was going to be okay while I drove into town.)
AD got him bedded down that first night. The next morning, AD let him out of the shop and Mikey went outside to do his business. He was (and is) very well mannered.
One of the first things he did was to offer us his paw to shake our hands.
We just let him run around and check everything out that next day. Never once did he offer to leave. And that continues to this day.
After about day 3 we decided he needed a name. Since our fur kids all have NASCAR names and he stood head and shoulders above our other 3 in size, we decided Mikey was the perfect name - after Michael Waltrip who is one of the tallest drivers in NASCAR.
A week or so later, Mikey's bed was moved into our garage. Now he has a Dogloo house inside the garage.
All of these photos were taken one year ago.
This one was taken a few minutes ago in AD's shop. Whenever AD is out there working, Mikey likes to lay on the old couch that's out there.
We are so glad Mikey found his way to our home and that he decided he liked us well enough to stay.
How sweet! It amazes me how cruel humans can be to animals who are dependent upon them. Looks like Mikey found where he needed to be! I'm sure all of your lives are better for the choice he made to adopt ya'll!
ReplyDeleteI love both Michael's ;-)
ReplyDeleteMikey is the sweetest puppy dog. Destiny sent him to your door that night. You did a very good thing.
ReplyDeleteHe is lucky to have found you. I have rescued animals that acted like they had been abused. It is so sad. It melts my heart when they learn to trust me. It's clear that you have earned Mikey's trust.
ReplyDeletewell, mikey is a sweetie and agree with everyone that he was fortunate he found a good home! thank you for being tender-hearted.
ReplyDeleteThat is so neat. I hope we can find a dog for Herogian like Mikey. What a blessing?
ReplyDeleteIsnt it amazing how they find us????
ReplyDeleteOhh! How kind of you to take in a stray dog and adopt him into your family.
ReplyDeleteYou're a sweetheart!
Sweet dreams.
What a wonderful story. I am so happy Mikey found your home. Aren't dogs just the greatest friends? Give him a big kiss for me.

Your story made me cry yesterday and I couldn't post. I'm so glad Mikey found you--he's a beautiful sweet dog. I once had a dog that would cringe if anything resembling a stick was raised in his presence: rolled up newspaper, baton, pointer...he would fall down and start whimpering. Broke my heart that humans can be so ugly to animals--and this guy is sooooooooooo lucky to have you and AD. Thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeleteThat is just the most precious story. Sometimes I wonder if God gives us these strays to be our companions. Our stray (Henry) has certainly been the best!
ReplyDeleteI got a lovely postcard from you today. Thank you!
Well, you are invited to the party...races or not. If you can record the race and come...please do. It will be so much fun. I'd love to meet you!
ReplyDeletehe looks like a very happy fella!
ReplyDeleteThat is soooo awesome! I love stories like that.
ReplyDeleteOh Girl...I love this story. Our little Yorkie stuck away from my Mom right after we got her and some sweet soul brought her all the way to my home. Too bad there are more pet lovers out there to stand in the gap for our furry friend.
ReplyDeleteYour pooch is gorgeous.
Love to you~Rebecca
Thank you for sharing that great dogie story. You blessed the dog and you are receiving rewards from it. That was a very nice jester on your part. Love it.
ReplyDeleteWe've been so blessed by those strays that have wandered into our lives, haven't we? Mikey looks like a really sweet dog.
ReplyDeleteThis story touched my heart. You and AD are such good people. My Grammy used to say animals and children are the best judges of character.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad Mikey found his way to your home and heart. He is beautiful.
When I got Scout (the Rat Terrier) he was 10 months old and in his fifth home. I suspect he was abused also.
