August 6-13 was Fair and Rodeo week in Coffeyville, KS.
Joe Nichols on stage |
This year's concert headliner was Joe Nichols. AD knew I'd want to attend the concert and so he bought fair passes for the both of us.
When we headed to the fairgrounds the sun was shining and it was hot.
The opening band was late coming on stage although I don't know why. They were from Texas and they were pretty good.
The sun went down and the weather started to change. There was lightning in the distance but no thunder.
We stayed in our seats hoping Joe Nichols would come on stage before the weather turned bad.
Unfortunately that didn't happen. He was supposed to hit the stage at 9pm but it was 9:45 or so before that happened.
Joe was about 1/3 of the way through his first song and the sky opened up. Everybody scattered. I really felt sorry for the poor sound guys trying to get all their equipment out of the weather.
We stayed underneath the stadium for a bit but the rain continued so we left along with everyone else.
On the upside the rain was badly needed.
Jr Ranch Rodeo Branding Competition (A real branding iron was not used.) |
On Sunday AD and I attended the Junior Ranch Rodeo. We watched several events but it was very hot and I began to feel bad so we left.
On Tuesday night there was a demo derby. AD has attended almost every year. This was my first time to go with him.
We went to the rodeo on Wednesday and Saturday. It had rained quite a bit so the arena was pretty muddy.
The little mutton busters were fun to watch. Most of them fell off their rides so they came away pretty muddy. But they had soft landings.
My favorite event has always been the bull riding. Those guys are incredibly brave! So are the bull fighters a.k.a. rodeo clowns.
I took a lot of photos over the week. This one was hands down my most favorite of all. It was taken just as the sun was setting over the stadium during the demo derby.
It was a fun week with lots of memories made.
Neat shot of the Ferris Wheel in the sunset!
ReplyDeleteI love the Ferris Wheel photo also! You might want to blow it up and to enter that in the fair next year!
ReplyDeleteBesides for the rain and heat...it looks like you had a great time. We have a county fair in October that we look forward to. Hoping it's a little cooler by then.
Love your photos..
You are always up to something interesting or fun! It's a shame that the rain couldn't hold off for a few hours. I'm sure there were a lot of disappointed people. I remember showing my horses in the summer as a child. It was so hot in the arena and wearing breeches, jacket, hardhat (English riding attire) that I passed out once. We have the "oldest weekly rodeo in the United States" locally but have never seen little mutton busters. (Laughing) Your sunset photograph is stunning.
ReplyDeleteYour Friend,
Deborah
You were busy last week! Looks like fun. The heat really bothers me and makes me sick if I'm out in it too long. It just seems to zap the energy out of me.
ReplyDeleteIve always loved demo derbies! And that last picture is beautiful!!! Just beautiful!!
ReplyDeleteLove a demo derby!!
ReplyDeleteAlso love that ferris wheel shot...great job!
Have you seen the video on tv today of the stage collapsing in Indiania just before Sugarland was to perform??? Very scary and some were killed... it was a storm there also.
Thanks for traveling to the KS with your travel bucks!!! :o)
Looks like so much fun!! My daughter loves Joe Nichols. She'd be so jealous!
ReplyDeleteGood Morning,
ReplyDeleteIt's fair week here too...so much fun. I love your last photo of the Ferris Wheel.
I'm sorry it took so long to get back to you. We spent a week out of town...and then had to focus on hubby's birthday party.
Took me a while to find this. Go to your Dashboard, then Edit User Profile...
then, check the box for 'show my email address'
I hope this does the trick! Make a thoughtful Thursday. ~Natalie
Great photos!!!! I'm glad you had a good time and out of danger of the storm. I love your comment on my blog. You are so funny!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE the rodeo but my husband doesn't. This year I'm taking my 11 year old grandson, he can be bribed with corndogs!
ReplyDeleteSounds like a great weekend. Sorry about the concert getting rained out.
ReplyDeleteAttending the PBR event whetted my appetite for a real rodeo. PBR is okay but I didn't like so much how announcer's and clown made fun of the cowboys especially the guys from Brazil. I think the cowboys deserve a lot of respect. Most of them were pretty beat up before the event even started.
I love your last photograph. Its a dandy.
BEAUTIFUL picture of the sunset!
ReplyDeleteSorry your concert got rained out. That's a bummer.
I love rodeos. I haven't been to one in a long while though.
I really really would love to attend a real rodeo granny, I've been on one of those fake bulls that you put a dollar in. That doesn't count as a real rodeo though does it?
