Sometimes It's Hard to Get Home

This morning I had to make a trip to town. Usually it takes me 30 to 35 minutes one way.

Today it took me a little longer coming home. I had to stop for these Volunteer Fire Department trucks on the highway. Yes, that is a highway.  And yes, the term "highway" in this instance is used in a very broad sense.

This pasture fire was the reason. There's been a lot of those around here lately. Scary stuff, I tell ya.  A little further down the road I had to pull over because another fire truck was barreling down the highway, sirens going and lights flashing.

I'm not sure if they were headed to the same fire or another one.

Our local volunteer fire departments are worth their weight in gold. We live equi-distant between 2. And we pay dues to both. Our thought is, belonging to both departments, we double our chances of getting help fast in case we should ever need it.

Once off the highway, I had to stop for this guy. He was out for a stroll. And stroll he did. Back and forth across the road a couple of times before he finally stopped long enough that I felt like I could get by him.

I know. I know. He would have moved for me if I'd kept going. AD tells me that all the time. I'm just scared I might come across a really stubborn cow sometime who wants to play "chicken" with me. And I'd hate to hit a cow. Just look at their big ol' eyes. Not to mention hitting one could do serious damage to my car.

Now at this point I was a bout 3/4 of a mile from home. You'd think there wouldn't be anything else to hold me up. Not so!

Just as I turned the corner on up the road there was a whole flock of scavenger birds feasing on the carcass of a dead 'possum. (I'd seen the critter laying in the road on my way into town and wondered how long it would last there.) No pictures for that. It was just gross!

And those stupid birds were NOT going to fly away. I'm thinking they were thinking strength in numbers. That, or they'd heard about AD hitting the wild turkey a few months back and they knew I'd be cautious so as not to hurt my car's grill again.

Finally, I'd had enough and honked the horn several times. They decided to give me the right-of-way and I made it to the house. Whew!

So, how's your Monday going?

  2. We've started praying for rain here. Last night my daughter saw lightning and I was hopeful for thunderstorms. I saw reports of hail somewhere in the US and I thought I'd even take that because it was moisture.

The volunteer firefighters are true heros in the Oklahoma drought.

  5. I saw on the news that your area was hit by fires. I can't believe how dry it is. Is this a forecast of what our summer will be like?

  6. Yep...an Okie's life for sure.

What stood out to me is that you pay DUES to your volunteer fire depts. My hubs is on a volunteer dept and there isn't such thing. Their dept is sooo poor and in need.

  9. Don't you wish you lived in a big city, with their traffic congestion...not. You made me laugh at the things and critters that delayed you!

  12. Well that was an interesting read and experience you had :o) Our Coweta area is in a big to do about fire service. The city has decided to stop furnishing fire service outside the city limits. We live in the city limits but we have a lot of church friends who do not. You may have seen this on the news.

  13. It is funny how some days have so many road blocks.
We are having a lot of fires here.
We do support of volunteer fire dept everytime they have a fund raiser.
My son was on the fire dept so I know how many times they risk their lives at a fire.
    Have a nice day.

  15. I am surprised that you didn't run across a farmer with a trailer full of hay going very slow! That is usually what happens to us.

  17. Oklahoma country roads are the best. So much to see! I bet the owner of that cow would like to get him fenced back in. A lot of money on those four legs. We are so dry here in central Oklahoma. We haven't even haad lightening, which is a good thing right now.

  19. Oh Sweetie...
You have brought me home for sure. Nothing like Oklahoma back roads. One day soon I will have to write my story about the chicken on the back road. It is something else.

I love seeing the cow lose. You just never know what you are going to find on any of the back country Oklahoma roads. Always have your camera handy.

I have heard about the dryness and all of the fires going on there. It is something else I tell you. I pray for the farmers and the land and homes each and every night. The year is to early to be so dry.

Thank you for the share today. It made my heart SO "HAPPY". Have a glorious weekend sweetie. Many hugs and much love, Sherry

  20. Thank you so much for stopping by and leaving a comment about the quilt. That was so sweet.

I am with you, I'd much rather live in the country and travel country roads than the city!!! At least the scenery is nice, not just buildings, cars and people.
