Trying to Beat the Heat

This is what this week's weather forecast looks like for these parts. It's much the same as it was last week.

Last Wednesday someone clued me in on froggtoggs Chilly Pads. I drove directly to our local Hibbett sporting goods store* and bought one for G1 to use under his fire suit when he races.

I went back the next day and bought 2 more - one for AD and one for G2 to use when he races.

On Friday I decided I needed one too. So back I went to the store. They were almost sold out.

No wonder with the heat we've been experiencing.

AD and I used ours Saturday night at the races.

It was really hot and that chilly pad really helped me stay cool. Well, not like air-conditioning cool, but way cooler than I would have been without it.

AD said his helped him. G1 didn't try his out though. Silly boy young man!

I haven't talked to G2 to see if he used his. (He was in Hutchinson, KS racing on Saturday night and in Muskogee, OK racing last night.)

So now the 3 that's at the house have been rinsed out, rolled up, put in plastic bags and they're chillin' in the fridge until tomorrow night. We're on our way to OKC to watch G3, G4 and Girlie participate in their baseball/t-ball games.

I'm pretty sure 100% we're gonna be needing them.

*When I checked for stores in Oklahoma that carry the Chilly Pads I found that Academy and Bass Pro also carry them.

  1. This heat is unbelievable! I need to buy some of those chilly pads. There's an Academy not far from my house.
Take care and try to stay cool.

  2. We had perfect weather this past weekend -- a very comfortable 80. However temps are headed where yours are this week. I think I will purchasing some chilly pads. Thanks for suggesting them! The older I get the less I like heat. (At this rate I will be the only one who retires and heads to Alaska not Florida!)

  4. Okay, that is something my husband needs. He works outside in this heat. It is not as hard on him in the winter because he is moving to keep warm but in the summer its just plain hot. I love your idea about a quilt made out of EJ t-shirts!!!

  5. Temps here in OKC area are just as bad as up where you are. Now they are saying it could be September before we get out of this heat.

  8. Glad you found a way to stay cool. The heat and humidity is unforgivable, but it's still better than an ice storm, right?

  10. If you go to a store that carries things for welders, there is a headband that you soak overnight and it helps keep you cool all day. Some years ago we found out --somewhere-- about how much it helps just to wet down a small towel and wear it around your neck. Hubs and Spike wear those when they mow grass and I wear one out in the garden. They really made a big difference last year when we were moving all that raised bed dirt during August!

  11. Not familiar with these pads. With this heat, use whatever to stay cool.

  12. Those temperatures are uncomfortably hot, glad I'm not in Oklahoma at the moment. My pale celtic skin would burn to a crisp.

  16. Last evening when I stepped out into the night to take Gracie for her walk it felt like I was stepping into an oven. The older I get and the more weight I put on, the less I can take the heat. This chilly pad looks like it might be just what I need to beat the heat. Thanks for sharing... I'm going to check on this.

  20. meowmomma, You use it like you would a wet towel but you don't get sopping wet because you rinse it in water then wring it out. It stays cool for several hours. The package says, "All sports, all terrains, all purpose, evaporative cooling towel. . .absorbs sweat and keeps you cool during a workout, hard ride, tough climb . . .keeping the chilly pad wet will allow its moisture to evaporate and continue cooling for hours. . .machine or hand wash." It also says, "The smooth side is for absorbing or drying. The textured side is for cooling. Add water to increase the cooling effect." Hope that helps. I used mine last night when we went to our OKC grands ball games. It worked great. Just like it did when we used them at the races last weekend.

  24. You should have seen my guy and I out yesterday. I was wish I had on a tank top (I don't wear them) and short shorts (don't wear those either). It was SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO hot. We were back home by 12:45 and all we could do was SLEEP!

GREAT IDEA here! I'm thinking they'd be great when working outside!

    Love to you~
