Monday Night's Mowing

When AD got home yesterday afternoon he said it would be a good time to mow. Between the two of us, we mow about three and a half acres.

With the mower gassed up, my hat and ear protection on, I proceeded to mow my area.

Usually, there's really not much to see except the grass. But not last night.

Not long after I started I caught sight of this little guy. Can you see him? He's just to the right at the top of my shadow. Although it doesn't look like it I'm really pretty close to him. He just kept running back and forth along the mow line and seemed to be looking for something, not caring that I was around.

Later I caught sight of this dead snake. He must have been in the path of my mower but not concerned that I was around either. I'm not a fan of snakes but if I'd seen him I wouldn't have intentionally run over him.

I don't make a habit of carrying even a small camera with me while I'm mowing. After all, what could there possibly be to take a photo of? When I saw Mr. Quail I did wish I had my camera. As I watched him it suddenly occurred to me that my cell phone was in my pocket so I was able to get a couple of photos of him. Not great, but better than nothing.

Maybe I should start carrying my camera with me after all.

  2. I carry my camera everywhere I go. People (including my kids) look at me funny sometimes...I take pictures of just about everything! :-)
I'm not a big fan of snakes either. I love to mow. We just have a front and back yard, so I use a push mower. I still enjoy it though. It's my thinking time (and a little more exercise!)
    Have a great day!

  3. I carry my camera everywhere. My wife and I saw our second snake of the season Sunday on a bike ride but by the time I could get stopped and back to where it was he was gone.

  5. I pretty much have a camera with me all the time but I just didn't see the need for having it with me while I mowed. In fact, I almost didn't take my cell phone with me. I could just see me dropping it and mowing right over it.

  6. The best shots are when you least expect them. I don't carry my camera everywhere either. I should. Maybe I will recharge my old digital and keep it with me all the time.
P.S. I love the smell of fresh mowed grass. We still have brown tufts coming out of the ground. Should green up soon!

  8. I am not a big snake fan at all.
Hubs mowed our 3 acres with his lil red toy and I will not use it. I'm a scary cat of big machines.
    Have a nice day.

  9. I usually carry the camera with me but there is always a time that I left it in the studio that I wish I had it with me. Great shots with the camera...when I use my camera, the pictures are never clear.

  12. We had a nest of quails on the property last year. They were so funny, because they would walk around but the moment they spotted me with a camera they would dart all over the place. Snakes are a part of life on a farm. Like you, I am not a fan but would not go out of my way to hurt one. They serve a purpose. You have no idea how many times I have repeated the mantra: I must get in the habit of not leaving the house without my camera because of all the great shots I've missed!

    Your Friend,
    Deborah

  13. Good Morning Sweetie...
Oh my gosh, I am SO terrified of snakes. I had one slither right up my chest one day. They scare me totally.

I love it that you help mow, I love being on a tractor outside. Nothing better is there? Everything looks so beautiful and green. You have gorgeous property sweetie.

Hope you are doing well and that you have a beautiful Wednesday. Many hugs and much love, Sherry

  14. I love mowing a small patch on the side of my house that we have to use a push mower on because of flower beds. You just never know what you'll be able to capture if you have your camera. I love nature (except snakes)

  15. I carry my camera at all times. However, I do not when I am mowing. Of course, I do not have a riding mower. Snakes scare me.

  18. Hi - I decided to visit all my blogger friends - I haven't been on in awhile.

Good idea about mowing with a camera near by. We mow about 3 acres. I haven't run over a snake yet - but have run over quite a few frogs. I just don't see them in the grass :(

  23. This blogging business has added yet another don't-leave-home-without-it item to my bag...the camera! It was in it's bag, lonely and forgotten, until I started my blog. Now I can't live without it!!
I don't have a lawn to mow, but the memories of freshly mowed wet grass lingers in my mind!
