Finally A Few Customers

Back in late January, AD and I put up some new bird feeders. Although the weather was very cold and we were sure there were hungry birds around, the perches on the feeders remained empty.

AD put an old cookie sheet below the feeders and filled it with seed, hoping that might catch a passerby's attention.


Since then, I've watched throughout each day hoping that some hungry bird would pass by, see the free food and stop for awhile.

Finally, yesterday a couple of red-winged black birds showed up to feed from the pan. I watched intently and finally one hopped up on one of the perches and began to eat. YEA!

I ran to get my camera hoping the birds wouldn't be frightened off before I was able to snap some photos. YEA again - I was able to capture a couple of shots before they flew away.

Note: I apologize for the fact that the pictures aren't very clear. Rather than risk scaring our visitors off by opening the door, I took the photos through the glass.


Today the black birds came back and brought a few brown-feathered friends with them.

Since I'm not very good at identifying birds (because of the size I don't think these brown ones were sparrows), I have no idea what kind of bird hopped up on the perch. See his little tail feathers hanging down on the left side of the feeder? Maybe next time he'll perch on the other side of the feeder and I'll be able to get a better shot.

I'm just glad the word is spreading around the bird grapevine.

Open For Business

Last weekend AD and I purchased a couple of bird feeders and some food. AD set a shepherd's hook, filled the feeders and hung them up. Then we waited for the birds to come. We watched and we waited. No birds came.

I told AD maybe we should put out a sign saying "Free Food." He just rolled his eyes. Later that night I gave him some stale bread to tear up and throw over the fence thinking that might lure some birds close to the feeders. Still no birds came.


This morning I looked out to see Mikey and his friend, Cosmo, eating the bread that was still on the ground.

It's a nice, sunny day today. Still no birds.

The weather forecast for the rest of the week looks like this.

Maybe the birds will make their way to the feeders when the predicted ice and snow is on the ground.
